Housing the masses is as much a social concern as it ever was - but Wood Green does have an interesting example of late Victorian housing enterprise...

Affordable housing, slum clearance, social housing... The names change but the aim remains: to build homes fit for human beings to raise families with dignity.
The Noel Park Estate was one such project of 1889: a 100 acre estate established by the Artisans, Labourers and General Dwellings Company.
Up to that time, blocks of flats were subject to a planned approach, as in the estates built by the Peabody Trust.
The small house was less favoured for reasons of economy and space but here is an early example of long terraces built of stock brick.
It’s not all grim uniformity: more modern, though modest, touches abound among the 2000 plus properties, such as tree planting, gardens front and rear, a group of larger houses, taller corner houses with gables - and a pleasing variation in porches.
